FELIPE DEL AGUILA
To mark Aloardi’s 19th anniversary, visual artist Felipe Del Águila has been granted an artist-in-residency as part of the Aloardi Exchange Programme 2017. His exhibition, ‘Connection-Disconnection’ at WORM S/ash Gallery will conclude this residency, opening on the 28th of October. Together with Wilder Gonzales Agreda, Del Aguila also initiates a series of public events in Rotterdam, called RAYMI.

Del Aguila is a visual artist and cultural manager with a background as photographer, graphic designer and web programmer. Graduated from the Escuela Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes del Perú – Visual Arts, Universidad ESAN – Marketing and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú – Management, Del Aguila is currently running his communication studio, AIRE COMMUNICACIONES, aside of his function as Head of Communication at the MAC – Museum of Contemporary Art (Lima). Since the mid-90’s he has been designing independent publications in the alternative circuit with the publication studio Contenidos Mutantes. He was also collaborating with various activist collectives. In 2001 he joined the Aloardi collective and remained one of its core members until 2009.

Felipe del Aguila’s artistic work often seeks a balance between art and activism. He will immerse himself within the context of Rotterdam, in order to understand and ‘hack’ the local dynamic. He mainly works with performative interventions in the urban public space, collecting found materials and trash, using language and text within a social-critical approach. Growing up in the Piñonate district in Lima, located close to busy street markets, Felipe got inspired by the constant appropriation of public space within Peruvian cities in relation to street commerce – something that is practiced in Peru mostly by people with lower incomes.

■ WILDER GONZALES AGREDA
Wilder Agreda’s prolific work and characteristic musical ethos makes him one of the most interesting figures in Peruvian independent music and sound art. He has been active since 1995 with influential bands like Catarsis, Avalonia and Fractal, who were part of a Peruvian psychedelic post-rock scene known as ‘Crisálida Sónica’. Wilder founded Super Space Records in and his discography consists of more than 60 releases. He also produces the radio show ‘Peru Metamusica’, dedicated to avant-garde rock and electronic music, which is transmitted by the FM Radio Comas, Lima. In the alternative South american network he is also known as a music journalist and philosopher, publishing articles with his blog ‘Peru Avantgarde’ (since 2004) and other platforms. Gonzales Agreda graduated in Communication at the University of Lima (2010) and specialized in Philosophy at the University Ruiz de Montoya (2005).

As artist-in-residence at the Aloardi Exchange Programme 2017 in October and November this year, Gonzales Agreda will perform at the Aloardi Festival ‘Peruvian New Music & Arts’ at WORM on the 28th of October, and produce a radio play to be broadcasted at the Dutch national Concertzender, a commission by Studio Klangendum. He also takes part in other Aloardi events in Rotterdam at Het Wilde Weten and Paviljoen aan het Water, amongst others. Link label Super Space Records.

ISABEL HUAYANAY
Isabel Huayanay is a talented harpist and singer who was born in Lima. Her vocal timbre represents a typical vocal style which is commonly practiced by female Andean singers in Huancavelica, in the Peruvian highlands. Huancavelica is the place of origin of folkloric traditions such as the ‘Tusujs’ or ‘Danzantes de Tijeras’, which translates to ‘scissors dancers’. These are ancient cultural practices of resistance that survived the colonial era. Isabel masters different Andean styles of traditional celebrations like her ancestors and harpist family members before her. Her appearance at the Aloardi Festival is a significant example of how rural Andean cultures are integrated in the Peruvian urban societies, and that of Lima in particular.

■ FABIOLA VASQUEZ
Fabiola Vasquez comes to Rotterdam to present the European premiere of her duo-project with Chrs Galarreta, the band Tica. Tica (which means ‘flower’ in Quechua language) emerged in 2003 from the vibrant El Rimac and Comas districts in Lima. Its members Vasquez and Galarreta were previously active in influential bands such as DiosMeHaViolado, Evamuss and Lapolarina. With their peculiar mix of dreamy pop and noise Tica quickly caught the attention of the Peruvian underground. They produced several releases on various Peruvian labels and played many live shows, but had to disband in 2008 when Galarreta relocated to Mexico. At the Aloardi Festival in WORM we will see the live rebirth of Tica and the launch of a brand new 7″ release and a K7 compilation, published by the labels Existence (FR) and Aloardi (PE). Link band TICA.

■ MATTHIAS HURTL & YOANA BUZOVA

Oyo and mmths have been alone together in Rotterdam and Vienna collaborating over the last few years. Their collaboration vary between multimedia performances, installations, browser extensions and short films. For the Aloardi artist-in-residence period Matthias Hurtl and Yoana Buzova will develop a bicycle module, for cassette tapes to be recorded and played through the movement of the bike crank. A cassette tape has a length of 30-45 minutes on each side. Matthias and Yoana will organize a bike tour in the residency area and record while biking, resulting in two recordings from each of their bikes. That material will become side A and B of a tape release. At the endpoint of the route the collected material will be presented in a small performance, where Yoana and Matthias will use the bike tape players as an instrument. The bike modification will be documented and made available and open for anyone to build and modify. This can also be realized in a hands-on workshop setting within the residency. The cassette release will be an audio translation of the nature of the route, the speed and dynamics of the biking, as it will be directly connected to the movement of the tape.

Matthias Hurtl (mmths) lives and works between vienna and rotterdam. He deals with questions on how sound manifests itself in a space and how interaction can change the listeners acoustic perception. His artistic work extends through installation, performances and wearable devices. mmths works have been shown in exhibitions and festivals in Europe, Asia and Africa. He holds a diploma in Digital Art of the University for Applied Arts in Vienna. Link website.

Йоана Бузова / Yoana Buzova (oyo) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator, passionate about public space and short-lived, neglected moments and objects. She employs low-tech, DIY methods, found and repurposed material to create poetic moments. In 2014 Yoana completed the Master’s Program at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Proud member of the The Tip Top Orchestra, first amateur avant-garde orchestra. Proud member of the Filmwerkplaats, Rotterdam. Based in Rotterdam. Link website.
