Mmths and Oyo have been alone together in Rotterdam and Vienna collaborating over the last few years. Their collaboration vary between multimedia performances, installations, browser extensions and short films. For the Aloardi artist-in-residence period at Paviljoen aan het Water, they will develop their project ‘Cranked Tapes’.

ABOUT CRANKED TAPES
Matthias Hurtl and Yoana Buzova are working on an instrument. A bicycle module to record and play cassette tapes through the movement of the bike crank. This self-made tool will be used to record sounds in the district of Charlois, where the residency is located. Through a series of bike rides and workshops with locals from Charlois, Hurtl and Buzova will collect and map special sounds sites. Responding to the inhabitants favorite spots, a sound map will be created and result in a cassette tape publication, to be released in the end of the residency. The release will be an imaginary soundscape of Charlois, an audio translation of the map, the speed and dynamics of the biking, as it will be directly connected to the movement of the tape.

■ MATTHIAS HURTL (AT)
Matthias Hurtl is a sound artist currently based in Rotterdam. In his practice, he often is fascinated by outer space activities. In the course of his work, he has investigated scientific materials like audio recordings, transmission signals and educational film footage. In recent years he has worked on sound installation, audio-visual performances, wearable devices as well as collaborating on various film and video projects, working on sound design, audio recording and post production. He holds a diploma in Digital Art of the University for Applied Arts in Vienna. Currently Matthias is completing his Masters Degree in Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

■ YOANA BUZOVA (BG)
Йоана Бузова / Yoana Buzova is an interdisciplinary artist and educator, passionate about public space and short-lived, neglected moments and objects. She employs low-tech, DIY methods, found and re-purposed material to make useless urban in.ter.ventions that interrupt passers-by and engage them in temporary fictions. Yoana completed the Master’s Program at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

ABOUT ALOARDI
Aloardi is one of the first independent labels / platforms in South and Central America. Starting in 1998, Aloardi began diffusing and producing experimental music, audiovisual art, sound related interventions, internet radio broadcasts and alternative acoustic research. Aloardi’s headquarters in Lima serves as venue for workshops, a residency programme, and a mediatheque.
