About Serpent is Present

In the ancient Andean-Amazonian culture, the serpent represents the underground (in space) and the past (in time) and is also related to water, maternal and feminine powers, fertility, continuity and the earthly energy that connects the different worlds. ‘Serpent is Present’, the name of Sajjra´s new release, is an anagram and a play on words to invoke those powers and reconnect us with them through the sounds. The «underground» or self-managed artistic communities have always been a cultural alternative to what is going on in the mainstream, refreshing contemporary human societies with challenging organizational strategies and artistic ideas not necessarily committed to a market or to private or governmental interests. During the hard times we lived through with the pandemic and what we are living now with the current geopolitical situation in the world, many self-managed organizations and communities are disappearing. More than ever, it is important to reconnect face to face with these self-managed organizations that are still alive and Sajjra wants to do it especially with cultures and countries that are not considered in the itinerary of artists and cultural activators because of geopolitical issues. Music is a fundamental act of life. Sharing it with any people in the framework of a publication or a concert closes a circle of continuity in life. The ‘Serpent is Present’ is a reconnection with our deep roots through the otherness in an invisible umbilical cord. It is a bridge between alternative cultures beyond borders, governments or any system that tries to separate and repress us.

About Sajjra

‘Sajjras’ music is a collection of telluric, ethereal, unique and unclassifiable songs that can evoke the resonance of Andean orchestras or sublime natural landscapes. They emanate textures and rhythms that call up urban and rural soundscapes mutating in epiphanies full of noise, color and trance.»

Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta Pando (Peru, 1976) is one of the important figures of the South American underground. Going back and forth from Europe, Asia, Latin America and his homeland, he has been experimenting with music, nomadism, dissidence, noise and arts in a strictly DIY way since 1995. This philosophy has led him to expand his poetry into realms such as song writing, installation art, software-hardware hacking, free improvisation, electroacustic and psychoacoustic compositions. His constant metamorphosis has given rise to numerous aliases and side projects: Aloardi, DiosMeHaViolado, Evamuss, Christian Galarreta, Tica, and Invisible Architecture among others.

His song project Sajjra emerged from the depths of the «Uku Pacha» in 2012, merging psychedelic songs with andean-tropical music and radical sound experimentation. With the release of the three albums ‘Sajjra’ (CD, Aloardi, 2013) , ‘The Sun Remains The Same’ (12″ Vinyl, Aloardi / Urbanoide / Fougere Musique , 2015 ), and ‘Synthexcess’ (12″ Vinyl, Buh Records, 2019) Sajjra fascinated the Peruvian alternative media, who chose ‘The Sun Remains The Same’ as album of the year 2015 and ‘Synthexcess’, as album of the year 2019. Sajjra’s new album titled «Serpent is Present» will be published in September 2023 by Aloardi (Peru – Holland) in lenticular poster format and by Arsenic Solaris (France) on CD.

In anticipation of this release, in July, Aloardi released the single ‘Srpnt s Prsnt’ as a handmade lenticular postcard designed in three different versions by the Russian artist Margarita Milova. This postcard contains a QR-Code to download a 24-minute, 26-second single composed by Sajjra during different periods of 2020 and 2022 between The Netherlands and Turkey. Otono label (Mexico) will
also release a tape version of the single in August, accompanied by remixes by Mexican artists Flores de Mezcalapa and Concepción Huerta. The single was presented at live concerts on July 19 in Saint Petersburg, 20 in Tallin and 21 in Oporto and 22 in Marseille. The CD will be presented in other European cities in the coming months.
